We're on a mission

Good infrastructure is the foundation of safe, prosperous and sustainable communities, across Australia and around the globe.

Infrastructure impacts every aspect of our lives and wellbeing. It connects our growing communities to fresh food, clean water, and essential daily services. Infrastructure powers our ambitions for a net zero society, economic growth and national security. The right infrastructure is essential to improving socio-economic equality, achieving a clean energy transition and an environmentally sustainable future.

This is a big challenge for a critical sector. And it’s where the ANU I2S (Institute for Infrastructure in Society) comes in. In Australia alone, governments are currently delivering an historic “big build” valued at an estimated $292 billion. Our work indicates that over the past decade, at least $30 billion in infrastructure projects have been cancelled or significantly delayed due to stakeholder pressure and lost social licence.

ANU I2S is delivering a fundamental evidence base, capacity-building and fit-for purpose tools to effectively engage communities, navigate social licences and manage social risk.

Today, decisions with profound, far-reaching consequences for our financial, social and environmental sustainability are being made. It is crucial that we are listening to the very communities that infrastructure is designed to serve. Community buy-in and acceptance will be the lynchpin to securing an increasingly urgent infrastructure agenda.

ANU I2S works in direct partnership with industry, government, civil society and communities. We are committed to highly engaged research that values the close, effective and meaningful working-together of academics and non-academics to generate new knowledge and practice transformation.
